The Caller IDs work on two technologies DTMF and FSK. FSK(frequency shif keying) technology is used in United States and some other Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) is employed in India and some other countries.
Usually Indians try to get cordless phones or caller IDs from abroad, mainly from US where the caller ID works on FSK. Those phones when installed in India won't show the caller information because in India the caller information is send over DTMF. But don't worry there is a work around for this problem. You can buy a Caller ID converter, which is basically a DTMF to FSK converter (which cost around Rs 300-400/-) and connect your phone / Caller ID through this device.
If you are using ADSL broad band net connection through the same phone line then connect the converter only after the ADSL splitter.
I may suggest to go for CallerIDs or phones that support both FSK and DTMF in that case it will work in all places.
Another issue that you might face will be the power adopter. Phones from US may have the adopter for 100-120V, but in India we require 220-240V adopter. Usually we will try to get another adopter for that device from some shops and they may charge us more. I may suggest to go for a voltage converter (basically a stepdown transformer) for 20VA (depending on your phones load, Just multiply the input voltage and current marked on the adopter for example 100-120V 100mA in that case 120 * 0.1 = 12VA) so go for 20-30VA converter). Do not buy replacement adopters from the local market, if the output is not regulated properly your device may fail or the batteries may go bad. I will suggest to go for a voltage converter so that you can use the original power adopter and the expense for the converter will be less.
I got a 25VA voltage converter for 100 bugs and a Caller ID converter for 400 bugs from SP road, Bangalore, India
